Nepal Flash Flood 2026: How the Disaster Began, What Is Happening Now, and What Comes Next

Nepal is facing a major flash-flood disaster in its northern Himalayan region after a sudden and extremely powerful surge of water struck Rasuwa District near the Nepal–China border on Wednesday, August 26. This is not a conventional river flood that gradually builds over several days. It is a rapid-onset Himalayan flash flood/debris-flow disaster, and the combination of mountainous terrain, monsoon conditions, damaged roads and bridges, and large numbers of people travelling through the area has made rescue operations extremely difficult. The situation is still developing, and casualty figures have changed significantly during the day as authorities receive information from remote areas.
